Safely Get Rid of Asbestos Sand in Perth and WA

Recent reports have identified asbestos contamination in imported children’s play products such as kinetic sand, decorative sand, and coloured sand sold in WA. This discovery has raised serious concerns about the safety of products often used in schools, daycares, and homes across the state.

If you’re in possession of any suspicious sand products including Kinetic Sand, Crazy Sand, Kids Play Sand, or even what’s marketed as decorative or coloured sand you must dispose of them responsibly. Asbestos fibres, even in small amounts, can pose long-term health risks when disturbed and inhaled.

Disposing of asbestos-contaminated materials, including play sand, must be done through an authorised asbestos waste facility. These facilities have the correct handling protocols to manage the materials safely and legally.

You’ll need to ensure:

• The material is properly wrapped and labelled in accordance with WA asbestos disposal regulations
  • If the sand is still in its packaging, place in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double tape it securely, label it and store in a secure location pending disposal.
  • Clean up sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a mask (P2 or N95). Double bag the sand, gloves, mask and cloths.
  • In other circumstances e.g long term use, wide area coverage, sand through backyards, reach out to our team for a consultation on the best approach.
• You call the facility ahead of time to confirm acceptance, operating hours, and packaging requirements
• For large loads, some sites require permits or prior bookings
